Based on a Chinese proverb, this quote is the basis of my teaching philosophy both in and out of the traditional classroom. I love conducting experiential learning opportunities for students. Learning by doing in the real world truly augments our students education.

  • Experience China – Spring 2013, 2016, 2018: Selected by application to teach for the Spring semesters in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China. Industry experiential learning activities developed and provided for students such as factory and mill tours and arious meetings with global sourcing offices.
  • Business, Industry & Retail in China – Spring 2012: Supervised and assessed 30 UW students (Madison & Stout) along with 4 other UW faculty/staff on factory, mill, retail, and cultural sites in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong.  Fully funded by Kohl’s Department Store
  • Trends in Europe, Faculty Led Study Abroad – Summers 2011, 2014, 2017, 2019: Traveling throughout England, France and Scotland while applying trend theory, meeting with trend offices in London & Paris while guiding students creating a trend insights project.
  • Wisconsin in Scotland (WIS) program – Summer 2009: Selected to teach for the Wisconsin in Scotland program.
  • MEDIA-204, Exploring Photography: Negotiated with Canon USA Incorporated to provide camera bodies and lenses for students to use for the class; $40,000 worth of equipment was provided

35% of all apparel imports into the USA come from China. As a future designer, product developer or buyer, understanding and seeing the production and supply chain is an amazing opportunity that very few have, even current industry professionals. Many brands and retailers are also looking at expanding opportunities selling to consumers in China (ie. Macy*s) . Understanding the culture, customs and the consumers in China is best done by immersing yourself.
