Appliqué to Zardozi: A Celebration Sampler, is the first of two major anniversary exhibitions celebrating the breadth and depth of the Helen Louise Allen Textile Collection, and featuring an international selection of textile-making techniques.

The exhibition’s subtitle, A Celebration Sampler, references historic hand-embroidered samplers traditionally made by young women. The sampler analogy is utilized as the basis to create a walk-through experience exploring 26 distinct examples of discovery and inspiration, creativity and experimentation.

The Helen Louise Allen Textile Collection is an educational resource housed in the School of Human Ecology. The Collection serves as a diverse and globally-engaged learning opportunity available to students, faculty, researchers, textile enthusiasts, and the public through the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Professor Helen Louise Allen [1902 – 1968] believed textiles were important cultural and societal records. An early proponent of material culture study, her evolution as a textile collector, practitioner, and instructor are explored in an accompanying exhibition One of a Kind, Ahead of Her Time: The Legacy of Helen Louise Allen in the adjacent Lynn Mecklenburg Textile Gallery.
