How to Apply

By applying to the Design Studies graduate program, you are also applying to the UW-Madison Graduate School and to the School of Human Ecology (SoHE) as your academic program.  Therefore, it is important to be familiar with the UW Graduate School, and SoHE, and the requirements for admission at each level.

NOTE: There are different requirements for admission to the MS, MFA, and PhD programs in Human Ecology: Design Studies. See below for full details.

Apply to Human Ecology MS: Design Studies (Deadline: December 1, 2017)

Submit to the UW Graduate School:

  • Online application indicating “Human Ecology MS – Design Studies” as your program selection
  • $75 application fee
  • CV/Resume
  • Unofficial transcripts or academic records from each institution attended (official transcripts will be required for students who receive an admission offer)
  • Official TOEFL or Melab score (International students only)
  • Three Letters of Recommendation (Submitted electronically through your Graduate School application)
  •  Uploaded Statement of Purpose/Reasons for Graduate Study
  • Upload a Writing Sample
    • Examples of writing samples include prior scholarly work such as term papers, theses, or published articles. All writing samples must be written in English and uploaded to the online application system as a PDF.

Apply to Human Ecology MFA: Design Studies (Deadline: January 1, 2017)

Submit to the UW Graduate School:

  • Online application indicating “Human Ecology MFA – Design Studies” as your program selection
  • $75 application fee
  • CV/Resume
  • Unofficial transcripts or academic records from each institution attended (official transcripts will be required for students who receive an admission offer)
  • Official TOEFL or Melab score (International students only)
  • Three Letters of Recommendation (Submitted electronically through your Graduate School application)
  •  Uploaded Statement of Purpose/Reasons for Graduate Study

Submit to the School of Human Ecology:

  • Portfolio
    • All MFA applicants must submit a digital portfolio for review.  The portfolio should contain no more than 20 images/pages and there is a 5 MB file size limit for each image or page. Applicants will be able to upload portfolios to the University of Wisconsin’s Box cloud storage system.  Digital folders will be created for applicants within 48-72 hours after their electronic application has been received by UW-Madison’s Graduate School.  Please contact Eric MacKay for more information.

Apply to Human Ecology PhD: Design Studies (Deadline: December 1, 2017)

Submit to the UW Graduate School:

  • Online application indicating “Human Ecology PHD- Design Studies” as your program selection
  • $75 application fee
  • CV/Resume
  • Unofficial transcripts or academic records from each institution attended (official transcripts will be required for students who receive an admission offer)
  • Official GRE scores (Institution code #1846)
  • Official TOEFL or Melab score (International students only)
  • Three Letters of Recommendation (Submitted electronically through your Graduate School application)
  •  Uploaded Statement of Purpose/Reasons for Graduate Study
  • Upload a Writing Sample
    • Examples of writing samples include prior scholarly work such as term papers, theses, or published articles. All writing samples must be written in English and uploaded to the online application system as a PDF.
  • Personal Bio Statement
    •  Describe concisely how your personal background and life experiences motivated you to further pursue graduate education. The personal biographical statement is not a statement of purpose that describes your academic plan. This statement should be no more than 500 words and should be uploaded to the online application system as a PDF.
