Building & Facilities

Report a Problem

For emergency business concerns during business hours (8am – 5pm M-F) call 608-265-0534 or go to BITS in room 1116.

Emergency building concerns that occur after hours, or on the weekend should be reported to University Police Department at: 608-264-2677.. You may need to leave a message.

Building Access

Nancy Nicholas Hall is open 7am-8pm. Off-hours access to the building or a secure space can be obtained through Building Information Technology Services (BITS). Bring a valid WISC card to room 1116 or email full name and card ID Requests for secure space must be made by the department chair, administrator, faculty or staff member assigned to that space.

Phone Lines & Voicemail Set Up

Contact with the office number, name, and NetID of the person who needs the line.  Please specify needs for long distance access and/or a voice mail.

Welcome Screen Postings

To post an announcement on the large screen in the main entrance, email a request to within one week of desired slide start date. Designed images must be 1920×1080 in PPT, PNG or JPG file formats. Email must include all relevant information and any pre-designed images along with the start and stop dates. The communications department reserves the right to reformat or redesign any requests.

Page Updates

To make edits to the SoHE website, complete the online Request a Change to the SoHE Website form. All requests are reviewed by the Communications Team and will be replied to in 3-4 working days.

Employee Directory

To update or add an employee in the SoHE web directory, email a completed SoHE Bio Form to Allow at least 5-7 working days for updates.

Graduate Student Directory

To update or add a SoHE graduate student in the SoHE web directory, fill out this form. Allow at least 5-7 working days for updates.

Posting Events

To have your event listed on the SoHE events page, please complete the online Submit an Event form. Please note that we prioritize events hosted at or by the School of Human Ecology. To access and submit to the campus-wide calendar of events, visit

Technology Information & Help

Computer & General Tech Help

For the fastest responses to computer help, email the Building, Information Technology and Security team at or, in emergencies, call 608-265-0534. The BITS office is located in room 1116 on the first floor in the northeast corner first floor.

Accessing Files Remotely

UW-Madison’s Palo Alto GlobalConnect VPN connects clients to the SoHE network while off campus. Start connecting with the  Remote Access Self-Install Instructions. The VPN requires you to use your NetID and password. To access the SoHE server, a SoHE account is required. Email BITS for help setting up a Windows or Apple laptop or acquiring a SoHE account.

Classroom A/V Equipment

Instructions on how to connect classroom projectors to laptops are located on the podiums at the front of each classroom. For additional help or troubleshooting, contact BITS at 608-265-0534, room 1116 or email

Video Requests

SoHE does not offer in-house video services for communications or academic technology. Video equipment can be checked out individually through BITS and the university offers a full range of for-hire video services through DoIT Academic Technology’s Video Production service, including educational videos for courses, presentation capture and marketing videos to showcase research, programs and services.

Laptop & Projector Loans

BITS has Dell PCs and Macbooks available for temporary loan to faculty, PA, TA, grad student, or lecturer. Non-building faculty require a campus ID # when checking out our equipment. Projectors, speakers, and microphones are also available. Some equipment can be checked out after hours. Ask a department admin for key access to room 4269.

Student Laptop Recommendation

It is recommended that students in Design Studies have a personal laptop, and that laptop have the capacity to run the software required by your Major. We have put together a guide to help you select a laptop that will work for you.

Software Training

UW-Madison’s DoIT Academic Technology provides a wide variety of software training. For instructors and student organizations, Software Training for Students offers Custom Technology Workshops. STS trainers work with you to design and deliver software trainings tailored to your specific needs. This free service allows instructors to focus on the course content and not the technology. Human Resources Questions

To change your address in personal records, complete the Address Change Form and submit to Ethel Herbrand, Payroll and Benefits Specialist-Advanced, room 2134.
