Dr Sarah Anne Carter, Center for Design and Material Culture

Dr. Sarah Anne Carter has accepted a two-year position as Visiting Executive Director of the Center for Design and Material Culture (CDMC) and Visiting Assistant Professor in Design Studies in the School of Human Ecology.

Effective March 1 2019 Dr. Carter will begin working part time, on loan from the Chipstone Foundation until the position becomes full-time in mid-August. In this newly created position, Dr. Carter will teach, conduct research, and work with CDMC stakeholders to develop a strategy and implement plans that support and expand the CDMC mission and core functions and key elements, including the Helen Louise Allen Textile Collection, Lynn Mecklenburg Textile Gallery, Ruth Davis Gallery and Design Thinking Initiative.

Dr. Carter is joining us after having served as the Curator and Director of Research at the Chipstone Foundation in Milwaukee during the past six years. While at Chipstone, she has collaboratively curated many innovative exhibitions, including “Mrs. M. —– ‘s Cabinet”, and directed Chipstone’s Think Tank Program in support of progressive curatorial practice. Dr. Carter is an author of numerous scholarly essays and author or editor of three books, including her recent monograph, Object Lessons: How 19th-Century Americans Learned to Make Sense of the Material World (Oxford University Press 2018).

Dr. Carter received her Ph.D. in American Studies and her MA and BA in History from Harvard University, as well as an MA from the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture.
