The Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ASCP) awards committee announced SoHE Assistant Professor Carolina Sarmiento has received the Chester Rapkin Award for Best Paper in the Journal of Planning Education and Research.
Research conducted by Sarmiento and Sims speaks to urban planners, community organizations and policy makers who are concerned about the growing need for affordable housing and how to address the issue. While the “go-to” strategy for urban planners has been to build affordable housing in communities that are facing threats of displacement and gentrification, research shows the need for a more nuanced way of determining affordability.
The Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning promotes education, research, service and outreach in the United States and throughout the world by seeking to:
- recognize diverse needs and interests in planning;
- improve and enhance the accreditation process, and;
- strengthen the role of planning education in colleges and universities through publications, conferences, and community engagement;
- extend planning beyond the classroom into the world of practice.
