Congratulations to Alicia Hazen, the recipient of UW-Madison’s Office of Undergraduate Advising (OUA) 2020 Community Leadership Award!

Wednesday morning, an OUA employee interrupted the SoHE advising staff’s virtual meeting to surprised Alicia, Director of Career and Leadership Development, with campus’ Community Leadership Award. Her team then began chiming in, sharing stories of what she means to them, the department, and SoHE students. “In true Alicia fashion, she responded to every accolade with a personal reflection on what she values about each member of the SAA team – further demonstrating why she is so deserving on this honor,” states Annette McDaniel, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education. “It was a much needed burst of joy for all.”

Annette and Madeline Braun, a SoHE student and Career Development Intern, drafted the nomination letters outlining Alicia’s remarkable impact in advising, including the creation of the school’s career readiness curriculum and leadership development.

“I am incredibly humbled to both hear and read all of the wonderful things my colleagues had to say about me and my work within the career services community,” Alicia shared. “I am very blessed to work with such an amazing team and to have the opportunity to play a role in the school’s growth and positive change.”

Full-time WFH, Studying & Parenting

Like many other families with young children, Alicia and her husband have been taking care of their young son while working full-time from home. In addition, she has continued to pursue a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership and Change degree from Edgewood College.

“Never in a million years did I think I’d be schooling myself through a pandemic! Thankfully, the coursework has been immediately useful to my position, which makes the extra time on the computer at night after my son goes to bed feel more worthwhile.”

Fortunately, Alicia and her family have also managed to squeeze in two camping trips and they hope to get in one more before the start of the Fall 2020 semester.

About the OUA Award

Each year UW’s Office of Undergraduate Advising sponsors annual awards for the campus advising community. The Community Leadership award honors individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the advising and/or career services community and awards up to $2000 in professional development funding to the recipient. The 2020 award winners are scheduled to be formally honored in late September.
