Design Studies Masters in Fine Arts Exhibition
April 30 – May 14, 2017
Each year the Ruth Davis Design Gallery showcases the final, degree-fulfilling work of Master of Fine Arts candidates from the Design Studies Department. The exhibition is the culmination of three years of intensive work as each candidate launches their formal career as an artist-designer.
The 2017 Design Studies Masters in Fine Arts Exhibition promises a broad spectrum of work; ranging from consumer-friendly retail interiors and an emergency shelter concept, to evocative fiber arts. Both the Textile Design and Interior Architecture disciplines are well represented by Hannah Bennett, Yeonhee Cheong, Liz Kozik, Grace Cervantes, Bixi Zhang, and Weizhen Zhang.
Interior Architecture MFA candidate Grace Cervantes reflects, “I believe beautiful and considered design has the power to transform and inform our ordinary experience…I intend to create an environment that will impact shopping behaviors in a positive way.”
Weizhen Zhang’s concept for an emergency shelter on Levuka Island, Fiji, stems from real life experience. Following the island’s devastation by Cyclone Winston in 2016, Zhang surveyed the local population and participated in the reconstruction of a local structure. She then occupied the dwelling to analyze its resistance to future storm damage. Zhang states “Based upon my research, I suggested changes and innovations for future transitional shelter design for Fiji and similar tropical islands post-disaster.”
