The establishment
of the first student clubs

Nu, 1924 |
In the earliest clubs,
students joined professional interests and collegiality. The Euthenics
Club (later the Home Economics Club) was founded in 1909. Any
student enrolled in home economics was welcome to join the organization
for the study of home economics problems and for friendships among
the students. Six years later, Omicron Nu began; students in the
upper ten percent of the junior class and in the upper twenty
percent of the senior class were invited to be members. Omicron
Nu promoted research, scholarship, and leadership for the well
being of individuals and families throughout the world.

| Gamma
Alpha Epsilon, 1924 |
In 1921, Gamma Alpha
Epsilon was founded to provide a professional organization for
students who shared a common interest in home economics as a discipline
and as a career. This local sorority merged with the newly formed
Nu chapter of the national honor society Phi Upsilon Omicron (Phi
U) in 1925, knitting the Madison campus into the larger national
home economics profession.
