A professor of Child
and Family Studies at UW for twenty-three years, Frank Hooper
earned a BA in Psychology and Sociology from the University of
Michigan (1962), followed by an MA (1964) and PhD (1967) in Psychology
from Wayne State University. Before coming to UW in 1970, Hooper
was an assistant professor of Child Development and Psychology
at West Virginia University for three years. It was during these
years that he established himself as a major researcher in Piaget’s
theory of development.
At UW, Hooper continued
making important contributions to research in logical concept
development from childhood through adolescence. He worked on several
projects funded by the National Institute of Education and published
articles in leading journals in developmental psychology. Known
as a demanding professor, Hooper attracted many graduate students
from different disciplines to his seminars.
His administrative
positions included chairing the Home Management and Family Living
Department from 1973 to 1974 and coordinating the Child and Family
Studies program area from 1976 to 1977.
