Margaret Cooper brought to her work in textile chemistry an extremely strong background in the sciences: a BA (1930), MS (1932), and a PhD (1934) in Chemistry, all from the State University of Iowa, as well as post-graduate work at Iowa and at Pennsylvania State College. Before coming to Wisconsin she worked as a research assistant for the Child Welfare Research Station in Iowa City, taught science and mathematics at a junior college, and held assistant professorships in chemistry at two colleges. She was appointed associate professor in textile chemistry at UW in 1945, and retired in 1974 after twenty-nine years of teaching and research.
