Human
Development and Family Studies professor Betty Black earned
an undergraduate degree in Music from Webster College and a Masters
degree in Music Theory from the Eastman Music Conservatory. She
later enrolled at the University of Texas where she was awarded
a Masters degree and PhD in Early Childhood Education. In 1986,
Black was appointed assistant professor in the Department of Human
Development and Family Studies as UW. While serving as director
of the UW Laboratory Preschool, she expanded and improved the
preschool's programs, and it became the first university-affiliated
preschool of its type to receive the highest level of national
accreditation. She also worked as an advocate for children through
her membership on several university committees related to child
care policy. After a long and courageous battle with cancer, Black
passed away on April 12, 2002.
