Judi Bartfeld is a Professor in the Department of Consumer Science, a Specialist in Cooperative Extension, and an affiliate at the Institute for Research on Poverty (IRP). She received her Ph.D. in Social Welfare from the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 1997. Her research interests are in the areas of hunger and food insecurity in the U.S., and economic support to single-parent families. Through Cooperative Extension, Bartfeld is also involved in community research and outreach in the areas of hunger, poverty, and related policy issues.
Current research and outreach projects include:
State-level predictors of household food insecurity. This research, supported by the Economic Research Service of the U.S.D.A., seeks to identify contextual characteristics of states (state policies, economic conditions, etc.) that contribute to cross-state differences in hunger and food insecurity.
Local-level predictors of household food insecurity. This research is designed to help local communities assess their levels of food insecurity among households with school-age children, and to identify community-level characteristics that are linked to hunger and food insecurity.
Food pantry use among single-mother households. This research seeks to document the extent of food pantry use among single mothers nationwide; identify factors that are linked to food pantry usage; and examine the relationship between use of private (food pantry) and public (food stamp) forms of nutritional assistance.
Child support arrears and child support payments. This research seeks to determine whether high child support arrearages among nonresident parents serve as a deterrent to future child support payments.
Wisconsin Food Security Project. This project involves development and coordination of an interactive website designed to provide policymakers, local coalitions, advocates, and others with local information about economic and food security. See http://www1.uwex.edu/ces/flp/cfs/ .
